Why You Need a Prescription for a Partial Denture

When you have a partial denture made, your Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) must work with a prescription from a dentist. This isn’t an extra step for no reason — it’s a legal and safety requirement to protect your oral health.

A partial denture sits amongst your natural teeth, so it’s essential that the teeth and gums supporting it are healthy. Only a dentist is legally allowed to carry out the full oral examination needed to confirm this. They check for things such as gum health, tooth stability, decay, infections, and any issues with your bite that could affect how well the partial denture will function.

Once this assessment is complete, the dentist provides a prescription. This confirms that your mouth is suitable for a partial denture and allows the CDT to carry out the clinical denture work safely and within GDC guidelines.

In short, the prescription ensures:

  • Your mouth is healthy enough for a partial denture

  • Any risks or concerns are identified in advance

  • Your treatment meets legal and clinical safety standards

  • You receive the safest and most appropriate care

Your CDT then takes over the denture-making process, ensuring the partial denture fits comfortably, functions well, and is tailored to you.
