Dental professional carrying out a denture MOT

Just like your car needs an annual MOT, your dentures benefit from a regular professional check-up. At Cotswold Denture Clinic, we call this a Denture MOT — a thorough assessment of your dentures, your gums and your overall oral health.

What Does a Denture MOT Include?

During your Denture MOT, Simon will:

  • Check the fit of your dentures — assessing whether your gums and jawbone have changed shape since your dentures were made
  • Examine the condition of the denture — looking for cracks, chips, worn teeth or deterioration of the base material
  • Assess your oral health — checking gums, the roof of the mouth, tongue and soft tissues for any signs of irritation, infection or oral disease
  • Screen for oral cancer — a brief but important check that is recommended annually for all adults
  • Professional clean — removing stubborn staining or tartar build-up from the denture surface
  • Advise on care and maintenance — confirming you’re using the right cleaning products and technique

How Often Should You Have One?

We recommend a Denture MOT every 12–24 months for most patients. If your dentures are older, or if you’ve noticed any changes in fit or comfort, more frequent check-ups are worthwhile.

Do I Need a Denture MOT If Everything Feels Fine?

Yes — and here’s why. Your gums and jawbone are constantly changing, even if you can’t feel it happening. Dentures that fit well today may be gradually loosening without obvious symptoms. Catching this early means a simple reline rather than the expense of entirely new dentures.

The oral cancer screening element is also a good reason to attend even if your dentures feel perfect. Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early.

How long does a Denture MOT take?

A Denture MOT typically takes around 30–45 minutes. We don’t rush these appointments as they cover several important checks.

Will my dentures need to be adjusted after a Denture MOT?

Not necessarily. If the fit is still good, no adjustment is needed. If we identify a fit issue, we’ll discuss your options — which might be a simple reline, a minor adjustment, or in some cases a new denture.

How much does a Denture MOT cost at Cotswold Denture Clinic?

Contact us for current pricing. We believe regular check-ups represent excellent value given the cost of replacing dentures that have been left to deteriorate without attention.
