Why do my dentures move when I eat?

Cotswold Denture Clinic · Patient guide

If your dentures move when you eat, they may no longer fit your mouth as they should. An ill-fitting denture can lift or shift as you chew, making a meal feel awkward rather than enjoyable.

That can become a real problem when you want to go out with friends. Instead of choosing something you fancy, you might find yourself wondering what you can manage, whether your dentures will move or how you will get through the meal comfortably.

Whether you are meeting friends for lunch in Cirencester or enjoying a meal closer to home in Poulton, you should be able to discuss concerns about denture movement with your clinician. Describe what happens during meals so the fit can be assessed.

Why does the fit change?

Your gums and the bone beneath them can change over time, while the denture itself can wear. A set that once felt secure may eventually become loose. The way your upper and lower teeth meet can also affect how stable the dentures feel when you chew.

If you have started avoiding meals out or choosing food purely because it seems easier to eat, tell Simon. Describe what happens: perhaps one side lifts, the lower denture slides or a particular area rubs. Those details help him assess the fit and understand what you want to feel more comfortable doing.

What can be done about it?

You do not necessarily need a new set. Depending on the condition of your dentures and your mouth, an adjustment or a denture reline may be considered. If they are worn or no longer suitable, Simon can explain the options for replacement.

At Cotswold Denture Clinic, Simon makes and fits dentures, so you can discuss both the clinical assessment and the work involved with him. The aim is to address what is getting in the way of everyday life, whether that is lunch with friends, a family dinner or eating out in the Cotswolds.

If you have only recently started wearing dentures, tell us when they were fitted. Getting used to a new set is different from an older denture whose fit has changed. Our guide to eating with new dentures may help, but ongoing movement or discomfort is worth having assessed.

Let’s talk about the fit

Bring your dentures and explain what happens during meals. Simon will check them, discuss whether they can be improved or whether new dentures would be suitable, and explain the costs before you decide.

Request a callback about your denture fit or call 01285 429014. We can confirm appointment availability and help you arrange the next step at our clinic on Butts Farm Courtyard in Poulton.
