What does a dentist do?
A dentist assesses oral health and provides dental treatment within their competence. If you still have teeth, concerns about them or implants, a dentist has an important part in planning your care.
A denture appointment does not replace ongoing dental checks. Tell the clinic about pain, bleeding or another mouth concern when you enquire, so you can be directed to the appropriate care.
What does a dental technician do?
A dental technician carries out the technical work involved in making dental appliances. Their role is different from that of the clinician responsible for assessing and treating the patient.
The General Dental Council explains the prescription requirements and exceptions for dental technicians, including denture repairs and shade-taking. Being a dental technician does not, by itself, mean someone has the same patient-care role as a Clinical Dental Technician.
What does a Clinical Dental Technician do?
A Clinical Dental Technician has additional training for direct patient care in dentures. GDC guidance allows direct provision and maintenance of full dentures for people with no teeth and no implants. Treatment for patients with teeth or implants is provided on a dentist’s prescription.
At Cotswold Denture Clinic, Simon Miles is registered as both a Dental Technician and a Clinical Dental Technician. Our article about Simon’s qualifications and background links to the relevant information.
Who should I contact about my dentures?
Tell the clinic whether you have a full or partial denture, remaining teeth or implants, and what you need help with. You do not have to work out the whole treatment pathway yourself before calling.
Ask who will assess you, whether a dentist needs to be involved and who will carry out the proposed work. Meet Simon or contact the team to discuss an appointment in the Cotswolds. All roles have limits; the right care may involve more than one professional.
