A denture is usually made through several clinical and laboratory stages. Simon walks through the process and explains what each appointment is there to establish.

Start with a consultation and plan

The first discussion covers your needs, existing dentures, mouth and any dental work required before treatment. If natural teeth remain, the appropriate dentist assessment and referral arrangements also need to be considered. Ask for the proposed stages and costs.

Record and check before finishing

Impressions help produce models of the mouth. Bite records and, where appropriate, a framework stage help establish support and tooth positions. A wax try-in lets you and the clinician check the appearance and bite before the final material is processed. Changes may require another try-in.

Fitting is followed by aftercare

Once finished, the denture is fitted and instructions are given. A follow-up review allows comfort, function and any pressure spots to be checked. The exact number of visits varies with the appliance and mouth. A careful staged process provides opportunities to identify changes before and after the final fitting.
