Why Does My Lower Denture Not Stay in Place?

Lower full dentures can be harder to keep stable than upper ones. Simon explains why the shape of the ridge and the movement of the tongue and lips matter.

There is less space to work with

The lower denture sits around the tongue and above the moving floor of the mouth. If the supporting ridge has become flatter, the appliance may have less resistance to rocking. Dry mouth can add another difficulty.

The borders and teeth need checking

A denture can be displaced if an edge interferes with moving tissues or if the tooth positions do not suit the support beneath them. The clinician needs to assess it in use, rather than judge only how it looks outside the mouth.

There is no single fix

Depending on the findings, an adjustment, adhesive advice, a reline or a different treatment plan may help. Implant retention can be discussed where appropriate, with a separate suitability assessment. Bring details of when the lower denture lifts or slides. That gives Simon a more useful starting point than simply saying it is loose.
