Needing a little denture adhesive does not automatically mean a new denture has failed. Simon explains the distinction between adding support and disguising a poor fit.
Anatomy affects retention
The supporting ridge and saliva help determine how well a removable denture stays in place. Some mouths provide less natural retention than others, even when the appliance follows the shape accurately.
Use the right product in the right way
Only use a denture adhesive intended for this purpose, following its label and your clinician's advice. Do not substitute household glue. Clean away adhesive as instructed rather than adding new layers over old deposits.
Know when to ask for help
If a new denture moves markedly, or you need increasing amounts of adhesive, arrange a review. Borders, bite and fit may need attention. Adhesive can be a useful part of a plan, but it is not a reason to leave pain or deterioration unchecked. Simon can discuss whether it is appropriate for your particular denture.
