Dentures can combine several materials, each doing a different job. Simon explains the common base and framework materials and why the choice should suit the patient.

Acrylic forms much of the appliance

Acrylic is commonly used for gum-coloured bases and denture teeth. Some teeth include additional layers or composite materials to alter their appearance and wear characteristics. The details depend on the product and design.

Some partial dentures have a metal framework

Cobalt-chromium frameworks can provide a strong, relatively thin structure and incorporate components around natural teeth. They are not automatically suitable for every mouth, so support and the condition of remaining teeth need assessment.

Flexible materials have different limitations

Simon discusses his preferences and concerns about nylon-based dentures. Their repair options and tooth attachment differ from acrylic, so ask how maintenance or future tooth loss would be handled. A material is not universally best because it is flexible, thin or more expensive. Ask why the proposed combination is appropriate for your own denture.
